摘要: Lexical tone is an important phonetic feature in tonal languages like Chinese and Thai. Previous studies mainly focused on naturally spoken tonal categories (e.g., Mandarin Tone 3) and explored the mechanism on lexical tone discrimination and identification and the categorical perception of lexical tones. As reviewed from these studies, listeners actually need to process two types of tonal information, acoustic and phonological information during lexical tone perception. Specifically, the acoustic information refers to the acoustic physical features of lexical tones as assessed by fundamental frequency. The phonological information refers to the different word meanings signaled by different tonal categories superimposed on a same syllable. Both of these two types of information are significant for the correct perception and comprehension of tonal languages. But most of previous studies considered the lexical tone as a whole and how the acoustic and phonological information in lexical tones are processed remains to be investigated. The present study dissociated the acoustic from the phonological information in lexical tones, and explored the roles of acoustic and phonological information on the pre-attentive processing of lexical tones, the effect of pitch type on the pre-attentive processing of acoustic and phonological information and the effect of native language experience on the pre-attentive processing of acoustic and phonological information of Mandarin lexical tones in proficient second language learners. Results from the present study contribute to further understanding the cognitive and neural mechanism of lexical tone processing.
