讲座摘要:
Mental features like consciousness and self as well as their alterations in psychiatric disorders are extensively investigated in current neuroscience. However, the neuronal mechanisms giving rise to mental features, i.e., neuro-mental mechanisms remain unclear, currently. I here put forward the hypothesis that the brain’s time-space dynamics is essential for transforming neuronal into mental activity thus providing their “common currency”. This is supported by various empirical examples of imaging studies (fMRI, EEG) on our sense of self, consciousness, and psychiatric disorders (bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia). Together, the data strongly support a primarily spatiotemporal rather than cognitive (or affective) view of mental features like self and consciousness. This warrants the future development of ‘Spatiotemporal Neuroscience” complementing current Cognitive, Affective, and Social Neuroscience. Such Spatiotemporal Neuroscience allows understanding neuro-mental mechanisms including their “common currency” and, importantly, offers novel treatment options in psychiatric disorders.

Georg Northoff, M.D., M.A., Ph.D.
I am a philosopher, neuroscientist and psychiatrist, holding degrees in all three disciplines. Being originally from Germany, I am now working in Ottawa/Canada where I research the relationship between the brain and mind in its various facets. The question driving me is: why and how can our brain construct subjective phenomena like self, consciousness, emotions.
