Binocular vision is the ability of using two eyes with overlapping field of view, to create a single 3D visual image. It gives a creature precise depth perception (stereopsis) and enhanced sensitivity (binocular summation). There are two distinct binocular functional processes to maintain the singleness of vision. The binocular combination/summation process integrates similar features from the two eyes, and the binocular inhibitory process suppresses conflicting signals or falsely matched images. Having an intrinsic interocular imbalance with one or both processes can cause sensory eye dominance (SED). In the first part of this talk, I'll introduce our recent finding that SED measured through binocular combination process and binocular inhibition process are strongly correlated, which suggest a common origin for interocular imbalance in these two different processes. Imbalance of both processes impair subjects' depth perception. Earlier work in our group showed that, perceptual learning of the binocular inhibition process alone can improve the depth perception of human patients with amblyopia or large SED. In the second part of this talk, I'll present my previous optical imaging results in the primary visual cortex (V1) of anesthetized monkeys, to show how the perceptual learning paradigm may affect animals' cortex. All together, our findings emphasized the importance of early binocular inhibitory process on functional binocular vision.
